The "I" in BRIC: Goldman Sachs coined the phrase "BRIC countries" in 2003 to describe the future growth of emerging countries - Brazil, Russia, India, and China. All four countries are expected to see explosive growth in vehicle sales for the next 20 years (with estimated growth rates of over 10 percent per year). The goal of this workshop is to highlight India's emergence on the world automotive stage. India and China particularly have been singled out as having potential to be sources of vehicles that are exported to the rest of the world. We will educate attendees about the two principal India auto manufacturers and their intentions to export vehicles to the U.S. and other markets. Tata Motors has purchased Jaguar and Land Rover and this past January introduced the "Nano" that will sell for $2,500 (though unlikely ever to be sold in the U.S.). It is clear that Tata has global ambitions. Mahindra Mahindra has already partnered with a U.S. distributor to develop a dealer network in the U.S. in anticipation of selling vehicles here. They have debuted a diesel hybrid SUV that would be the first diesel vehicle to be a hybrid. Additionally, the workshop will describe the vision of other global OEMs and the possibility that they will utilize India as a hub to export vehicles to the US. A representative from the Indian Association (FADA) will participate in the workshop and offer the dealer perspective of working with the Indian manufacturers. Finally, the workshop wil compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of India and China as potential hubs for exporting vehicles to the US and other markets.
